Outstanding Bingo Volunteer of the Month

Jane Desmaris fisrt visited the Highland Senior Community Center back in 1992. Back then, she had been taking regular visits with the trip department together with her best friend, Joyce Owen, who used to be the head of the trip office.

Out of the blue, Joyce asked Jane if she is interested to volunteer in the trip office, which she readily agreed in 1993. Since then, she have worked there every Tuesday, which lasted until a couple of years ago.

She also volunteered her time in the Thrift store when they are short of workers to cover the shifts. She helps out each year in the Fashion show as a model. But this time, her latest contribution is about the Bingo Program.

With the Senior Center losing four volunteers at the same time, they really need someone to help out. Jane Desmaris stepped up to help and literally taken over, saving the entire bingo program.

But it does not end there, people visiting the St. Bernardine Medical Center also sees Jane's cheerful face as she is the receptionist in the Emergency room and in the hospital gift shop. She added to her activities as a volunteer, she still continues going on trips, taking classes at the University and playing Bingo games.

Jane originally hails from Detroit, Mich., but she came out west with her husband to escape the cold weather. She immediately began working for Sears, which she stayed with for almost 31 years as a department manager.

The Executive Director of the Senior Center, Penny Lilburn said that they are really grateful for Jane because she is in the right place at the right time and for being there when the center needed her help most.
